If you are renting, there are obvious limitations when designing a space. You usually can’t change kitchen cabinets or light fixtures, and if you’re unfortunate like myself, you can’t even paint your walls. Although this is frustrating, you shouldn’t let this stifle your creativity. Having a space that you’re comfortable in is more important than ever, especially as we are spending more and more time at home. To save you some time researching, I’ve rounded up my top 5 renter friendly hacks. If you’re a creative person who wants your security deposit back, this one is for you!
1. Bring In Greenery
This might be an obvious one, but the benefits are so huge I can’t not mention this one. Adding greenery to your rental whether it be flowers and stems or potted plants are a game changer. They can make a stuffy apartment more airy by literally increasing your air quality. When it comes to non-potted plants I usually opt for stems rather than flowers. Flowers are often times more beautiful, but they are more expensive and don’t last as long. Trader Joe’s has some great stems at an affordable price, and sometimes my local grocery store will have stems at reduced prices. For Potted plants I usually opt for succulents. They are low maintenance and come in so many varieties. Not to mention, if you go on vacation you don’t have to ask a friend to come water them for you.
2. Hang More Art!!
Another seemingly obvious one, but hang more artwork! Especially when you’re stuck with boring unpaintable walls, art and photos will be key. Add art in unexpected places also. Art doesn’t have to be for just the bedrooms and living room. at the empty space above your toilet–hang a piece of art. Add art to small nooks in your kitchen, entryway, and hallways. If you don’t want to commit to one thing I recommend invest in a cork board–you can transition artwork throughout the seasons. I also recommend adding art in other ways than on the wall. Prop up a sculpture on your TV stand. Display your wedding photos in a frame on your nightstand. Get creative, and you’ll find your space will become much more homely.
3. Swap Out Your Light Switch Covers
By upgrading the switch plates in your rental you instantly elevate the feeling in your home. I think that the best approach for this is to be bold with your switch plate choice. I like these ones from Rejuvenation. The brass contrasts nicely with the stark white walls that are so common in rentals. However, these ones are pretty pricy. Fortunately, you can find similar knockoffs all over the internet.
4. Use Rugs
Use rugs, on rugs, on rugs in your rental. Especially if you’re dealing with studio apartment rugs can help designate areas in your space. A rug can indicate where the living room stops and the kitchen ends. I recommend investing in rugs that a versatile with multiple spaces of your rental too. That way, when you get a creative itch to make some design changes you can swap out rugs between rooms.
5. Invest In A Floor Length Mirror
Buying a floor length mirror that’s quality might be a big up front investment, but I promise it will pay off. Having mirrors creates the illusion of space when there isn’t any. You can add mirrors on the wall, or above a mantel, but I’ve found the best option is a floor length mirror. This type of mirror is meant to be on the ground, so you don’t need to worry about making holes from hanging it. Also, it is highly function when getting ready, and you will likely use one the rest of your life
I hope you enjoyed these hacks. Don’t forget to stay creative and think outside the box!
